Here’s some of the products we recommend to our clients:

Orthotics

Whilst fully bespoke custom orthotics provide the best support for an individual patient, many people only require support for a short period of time whilst they recover or they get suitable support from a commercially available (off the shelf) orthotic.

For patients requiring a commercially available orthotic, we recommend the Vionic range. For shoe fit, the three quarter length device is very effective and can be helpful for a range of conditions. This is the first step of orthotic treatment for patients with plantar fasciitis but is suitable for a wide range of conditions.

If you have a sports shoe or a shoe with a removable insole then the full length range can be a better option as you can remove the insole from the shoe and replace it with the orthotic. Vionic produce a version for men and women (different density material) and a lower profile version for tighter sports shoes and patients with a lower arch profile / height.

We often recommend the professional version of these orthotics as they last longer and we can adapt these if necessary depending on the condition. This is currently our preferred option for plantar fasciitis.

For easier shoe fit and day to day use, then the 3/4 length Vasyli Footprint Blue Easyfit is a good option.

For sports shoes, trainers etc., then the Vasyli Footprint Blue Easyfit full length allows you to replace the insole of the shoe with the orthotic and thus avoids making the shoe too tight.

For football / rugby boots or any shoes with studs / cleats, we recommend the Vasyli Prior orthotic designed by Premier Podiatry Director, Trevor Prior. See our video on how boots can affect the way you function.

If you are wearing a tighter / narrower shoe then the Orthaheel slimfit can help. However, if you have to compromise the amount of support you get due to the shoe, then the benefit is going to be less.

Relief for tight Calf muscles

If you have tight calf muscles, we have consistently found that stretching on a slope is the most effective way to relieve the tightness. This adjustable slope allows you to vary the height and therefore have a controlled progressive stretch.

Some people with tight calf muscles can benefit from a heel lift. The Carnation Skippies are a very cost effective way of achieving this. Made from Poron, they last for a very long time and will also provide excellent cushioning / shock absorbency. Conditions that may benefit from these include Achilles tendonopathy / insertional tendonopathy, Sever’s disease and plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis / Achilles tendonopathy

For patients with resistant heel pain / plantar fasciitis, we find a specific strapping technique very helpful. However, not all people can cope with the strapping and some are allergic to the tape. The FS6 sock is another option which can be of benefit and helps to keep the natural fat pad beneath the heel.

Similarly, if you have pain beneath your heel or in your Achilles tendon, when you first get out of bed in the morning, then a night splint may be of benefit. This keeps the calf and foot stretched whilst you are sleeping and can be very effective. We recommend an adjustable version as this allows you to slowly increase the stretch.

Prominent heel bone

A bony prominence at the back of the heel can either be due to spurring at the insertion of the Achilles tendon or a prominent bone on the outside of the heel, sometimes termed a ‘pump bump’.

The GelX heel protector is a removable ankle sock with a sheet of gel that protects the back of the heel and reduces pain from the bony prominence.

If you have a pump bump that does not settle, see our minimally invasive surgery for a cure.

Bunions

Whilst there is no evidence that any of the non-surgical treatments will cure a bunion (hallux valgus), there is some weak / limited evidence that a night splint may help to slow progression.

Painful / prominent toes

If you have clawed toes, hammer toes, a bunion, corns and callous, wearing a protective gel pad may be sufficient to keep you comfortable. There are a wide range available at protective gel pads at Simply Feet.

Supportive sandals / flip flops

For people who wear orthotics or want a bit more support during hotter weather, there are a range of sandals / flip flops that have built in support.

The Vionic range has the same type of support as provided by their orthotic range and these are available for both men and women. If you found the Vionic orthotics helpful, this may be a good option. We also provide options for sandals with removable insoles so you can fit custom orthotics and we are also able to make bespoke flip flops and Birkenstock sandals. Please contact us if you are interested in custom sandals.
